Allure on NYC Best Haircuts/Stylists -
Some stylists make us feel as if we speak another language—we ask for low maintenance and end up with unmanageable layers. But Alcantar understood our request, slicing long layers into our blunt ends to remove bulk, then staggering a few shorter pieces around the front. We left with a cut that flatters our wavy texture—and the comfort of knowing we were truly heard.

BioWhen a teenage Coby Alcantar begged her dad to let her drop out of high school to pursue a hair career, he made her a deal: go to beauty school part-time during her senior year. She agreed, and come graduation time had two degrees in
her hand.
Coby then headed straight from Santa Cruz to San Francisco where, at eighteen, she began an apprenticeship at Cowboys and Angels with co-owner Tracey McAllister who boasts a true Sassoon background. Because of Cowboys and Angels’ close relationship with Howard and Raymond McLaren of Bumble and bumble, Coby’s transition to New York in 2000 was a seamless one.
The McLarens would become massive influences on Coby, radically altering the way she looked at hair styling. At Bumble Coby’s primary focus was on education. Besides working on demos and educational videos, she was also offered a unique position developing a curriculum for the school and then helping teach the Bumble team. Training educators proved to be a strong suit.
Coby’s list of favorite hair icons runs the gamut from Jean Seberg in Breathless to Madonna circa “Burning Up” to Kurt Cobain, and she cites her former teachers and current peers at Whittemore as the ultimate inspiration for her work. Coby is known for her softly textured, unfussy cuts. She would like to state for the record that she never cut any Barbie’s hair.
